10G LAN service

A **10G LAN** (Local Area Network) refers to a network that supports **10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE)**, providing data transfer speeds of **10 gigabits per second (Gbps)**—ten times faster than traditional **1G Ethernet**.

### **Key Aspects of 10G LAN:**

1. **Speed & Performance**

   - **10 Gbps** (10,000 Mbps) allows for ultra-fast file transfers, low-latency gaming, and smooth 4K/8K video streaming.

   - Ideal for **NAS (Network-Attached Storage), video editing, and data centers**.

2. **Cabling Requirements**

   - **Cat6a** or **Cat7** cables are recommended for stable 10G connections over longer distances (up to **100 meters**).

   - **Cat6** can support 10G but only up to **55 meters**.

   - **Fiber optics** (SFP+ modules) are used for long-range 10G networking.

3. **Hardware Requirements**

   - **10G Network Interface Cards (NICs)** for PCs/servers.

   - **10G Switches** (e.g., **Ubiquiti, Netgear, MikroTik, Cisco**).

   - **10G Routers** (for WAN connections, though rare in consumer setups).

4. **Use Cases**

   - **Home Labs / Prosumers**: High-speed backups, virtualization, and media editing.

   - **Businesses**: Data centers, enterprise networks, and cloud computing.

   - **Gaming & Streaming**: Near-zero latency for competitive gaming & multi-device 4K streaming.

5. **Limitations**

   - **Cost**: 10G hardware (switches, NICs) is more expensive than 1G.

   - **Power Consumption**: Higher than 1G networks.

   - **Heat Generation**: 10G equipment may require better cooling.

### **10G LAN vs. 10G Internet**

- **10G LAN** = Internal network speed (between devices).

- **10G Internet** = WAN speed (ISP-provided, rare for consumers).

### **Future-Proofing**

- Many new motherboards (especially for workstations/servers) now include **10G Ethernet ports**.

- **2.5G/5G Multi-Gig** is a cheaper stepping stone before full 10G adoption.
